what would be the reason(s) for gas shooting out the carb?

My tilly HR carb does that a little bit. I notice it more when the breather box is off of course. I think its normal.

It gets worse if the check valve in the high speed jet is stuck open. If it's bad enough, the motor will flood.

Similar problem:
Mine ran fine on the stand at lower RPM, but when run 15-20sec at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle and then backed off the carb immediately spit gas halfway back on the seat, hear gas being sucked back into the tank, and stalls.
Suspect the tank vent may be blocked, but haven't checked yet.

Pull the welch plugs out of your carb and check the surface of the seat and ball in your check valve. They often collect corrosion and do not seat fully.
