Calling all carburetor experts!! A friend of mine just dropped off a HR73A from his '72 Elan 250 that he just rebuilt but now does not have any high speed. He claims that everything was fine until he pulled the welch plugs out and replaced during the rebuild. So I disassembled it, including the welch plugs. I did find the needle seat leaking by and changed that. Ran a wire through all orifices and reassembled. Now it fires up on first pull and then dies. The only way to keep it running is squirting gas in the carb throat. I just happened to have another 73A from another Elan in my shop and put that on. It runs like a Champ. So I have eliminated basically anything on the engine side like crank seals, etc. Is it possible that the check ball is hanging up? Or any other ideas? I don't have another 73A to give him either. Anyone got one? Thanks in advance for your help on this.

CHECK BALL IS HANGING UP OR BAD. DO NOT USE ACETONE OR SOME TYPE OF CARB CLEANER IT WILL DESTROY THE BALL. YOU CAN GET NEW CHECK VALVE/ BALL FROM E&C CARBS

I just ordered some. Thanks! I have found that even though you get them freed up, they still tend to stick. I am going to replace with new on every rebuild going forward.

Not sure what you cleaned it with but I have become religious with an ultrasonic carb cleaner and a simple green. Before I got it, my rebuilds were not always perfect and now I am the envy of the neighborhood of hillbillys
