Where can I find info on rebuilding a recoil? Anything I've looked at is not clear. Are they interchangable, I have a 72 olympic. It was missing recoil so replaced. When I pull, it's not gripping

My guess is its one of 2 things. Ether your starter pawl(dogs) are worn out. Or your recoil cup is worn out. First feel inside your recoil cup and see if there are little groves in there, they can get warn out. If there is good grip inside the cup your dogs are warn out. You should be able to find ether part pretty easily.

Yup, the starter cups wear down and the pawls loose their sharp edge. It's not a great design. If the grooves in the cup are not clean and robust I ditch it. Same for the sharp edges on the pawls.
