'internal' ignition coil?

Hey gang,

Seems everything breaks at once. My old Alpine has a 330 transplanted into it. Was running great but would not start in the fall and took it in for some new coils etc. I should have stayed to watch them do it as I never have done anything like that before.

As I left they told me to ensure I do something with the spark plug wire and secure it so it does not touch the muffler. Hehehehe I confess to forgetting to do it when I got back home.

Couple days ago I took the Alpine into some nice 16" deep powder in the back woods. Floated right across no problem until I smelled some burning and never thought anything of it. A minute later it dies. The plug wire hit the muffler and melted through.

It has a coil mounted internal to the case not external. Just wondering if it is easy access to replace the plug wire or do I need special tools to get at it? I am not even sure what manual would have this variant.

Wisdom appreciated.

Just watched GaWajn's single rebuild and am pretty sure my fingers would never get in there so apart it will have to come. But first I will try one of those NGK splicers to see it if will last me till spring.

I did see in another thread that it is a pre 71 engine with the internal coil.  I watched GaWajn's single rebuild again and took my magneto off and was easy to put a new plug wire in. Looks like there is lots of nice hot spark and will put the motor back in in the AM.

Though I did notice that the magneto holder had a crack in it so will have to go source one of those at some point. Would love to convert this to an electric start if I can find the parts needed from a donor.
