Hi,

Can someone tell me the bulk density of slaughter waste (cattle, sheep, goats) pls? Also if possible the C%, N% and approx. moisture level.

I want to try to compost slaughter waste in an in-vessel system.

2   General Category / Community Composting / red ants - the bain of my life  on: May 10, 2008, 10:55:09 PM

Hi, would be grateful for any advice from composters out there.
I've been composting successfully now for about 2 years. Last year, some red ants decided to make a nest in my compost bin.  As a result my garden was a no-go area last summer.  I ignored the problem hoping it would go away.  However, they are now back with a vengeance now the weather has turned warm.
I can't go anywhere near the compost bin with flip-flops/open footwear as a get nipped by them.  In fact the whole garden is now out of bounds but obviously it's a lot worse the closer you get to the bin. I recently tried something called d-phenothrin which I believe the worker ants are supposed to take back to the queen and then they all die (I think!)  I must say I have noticed a reduction but not quite enough to entice me back to the garden.  I can't put poison into the bin for obvious reasons.
I resent the little ba****** preventing myself and my family from enjoying our garden and am now beginning to think that the only option to get rid of the little critters is to get rid of the compost bin. I think composting is a great thing and I am really chuffed to be doing something to reduce landfill but I am now so fed up at not being to enjoy my garden with my 16 month-old son or to sit and enjoy some wine outside with my husband that I think getting rid of it is now the only option.
Does anyone have any proven working solutions before I do this? No voodoo-witchery exorcism type stuff please. Also one more thing.  Before anybody suggests  that it's a symptom that my compost is too dry (sigh!)...my compost is now so wet at the top it is infested with slugs! Of course it is dry-ish at the bottom but that is what compost is supposed to be of course.
Sorry for the long post.
Green-goddess (but not for much longer if things continue as they are)

3   General Category / General Discussion / Information - Large Composting Facilities  on: November 30, 2006, 02:10:53 PM

Hi - I'm searching for information on large composting facilities such as the one near Barcelona.  At the moment all I can find is information which gives a very positive view of this sort of plant.

There must be a down side in term of polution/health risk.

If you could provide any information or contacts I would be very grateful.

Dear Memebrs of the forum,
I wolud like to know what type of temperature sensors are you using. Mine are failing too frequently due to the harsh conditions in the compost pile. Also, if anyone has experience with in situ measurement of moisture content, I'll be grateful if s/he can share it with me.
Thanks
Michael

5   General Category / Commercial Composting / licence to carry and dispose of green waste  on: December 15, 2005, 02:09:54 PM

Please could you advise me of where I can obtain information regarding licensing for green waste carriage and disposal.

I intend to start up a small gardening business in 2006 and I am investigating the costs and legal requirements associated with the disposal of green waste.  I have sourced 2 local composting businesses where I can dispose of the waste, which I prefer rather than landfill, but I am looking for guidance as to whether I need a transport / disposal licence.

I have read various articles regarding waste management and exemptions, but I am still unclear of the law in this instance.

How many composters are assisting farmers to register thier land to receive compost?  Is the industry ignoring this new cost or absorbing it?

Many concerned to see the expansion of On-Farm composting were disappointed earlier this summer when new waste regulations did not include some long lobbied for and promised exemptions for farmers.
