| Offer the bookshops some insentives if they pay the postage. Or ask the shops to offer you insentives if you pay the postage. Between you, you could make your offer more valuable to eachother. |

The Self Publish Boards / Questions and Answers / Help with marketing? |

Hi guys,
I'm new here. I notice that in another post there is a book on mentalism, & curiously that is exactly the niche that our book fits into too.
Anyway, the book is "Mind Control: The Ultimate Revelation" & is on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mind-Control-Revelation-David-Shuttleworth/dp/0955497108/ref=pd_bowtega_1/203-8829666-3739158?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181943115&sr=1-1
(we managed to hit 600 in the Amazon ranking at one point!) & we've also managed to get it into a few Waterstones stores as well. We also sell of our website & ebay & 1 local bookshop & we seem to get orders from Bertrams though God knows where from.
Anyway, we've been selling it for about 3 months & it's doing fairly well. We've priced it at the sort of price that you'd expect to pay in a book shop, & thats where we want to sell it, but obviously there are lots.....& lots & lots & lots of them!
Is there a way that we can get them promoted to the independent bookshops, perhaps via independent salespeople/ marketers, & if so how do we find them, or is there a better way?
Otherwise I think we're going to struggle to market it very effectively due to the large number of shops, & the time & everything else that it would entail.
Any help would be very greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Dave |

Hi,
Has anyone else realised that the Amazon Advantage site has been hacked? I got a spoof email a couple of weeks ago, which I ignored correctly, and since then I have not been able to logon to the site.
Having contacted Advantage and they have told me that I have to create a new account!
Anyone else experienced this?
Regards

The Self Publish Boards / Questions and Answers / Re:Bar Codes |

When your book is printed, printers often add the bar code as a free service, or at little extra cost. If you need to add a barcode after printing I successfully downloaded a free barcode from this website -
http://www.tux.org/~milgram/bookland/
It worked well. Taking some care I printed them on sticky labels to attach to the books. To test them, I took one into a local bookshop, explained what I was doing it, they scanned it and it read first time. I got this tip from another small publisher who has done the same with no trouble at all. |

The Self Publish Boards / Questions and Answers / Re:Bertram's discount? |

I think it is a mistake to take Bertrams too seriously. The advice given above seems sound. Only give them the discount you want, but bear in mind it will influence the discount the bookshop gets. But this may not matter for a one off sale.
Although apparently similar, the rival wholesaler Gardners are worth taking seriously as they do seem to want to help small publishers, at least a little.
THREE THINGS NOT TO DO WITH BERTRAMS
(1) If you manage to talk to a human being, don't assume any agreement made is likely to remain in place. The man I spoke to left Bertrams a couple of months after talking to him.
(2) Don't pay money to advertise in their magazine to small bookshops. It achieved very little for me and they didn't even bother to post me a copy of the magazine with my advert
(3) Bertrams order ten books and you send them. A month later you are likely to get a letter saying they want to return five of the books for no sensible reason. If this happens to you, just ignore this request. They are just playing silly buggers. Just put the letter in the bin. It won't stop them sending you more orders once they have run out. |
