I received the following photo from a gentleman named Bob Martin. A few years ago, Martin was reading David McCullough's book Truman, and a photo of construction in the White House caught his eye. It was taken during remodeling around 1950 by National Parks Service photographer Abbie Rowe. The apparent apparition is clear and startling. Compared to the other men in the photo, its size scale is accurate. And if this were due to some motion or long exposure effect, the rest of the photo should be affected, as well.

Thoughts?

Here's a closer look at the area containing the figure:

Very interesting. And it's a picture where no one was suspecting anything anomolous.

The image Joshua Warren has unearthed deserves to become part of the classics.  It reminds me of the following image from the same time period.  Fire Ghost Girl:

Though I think Joshua's image is even better as we all have heard the myths of the White House ghosts and hauntings for years.  This is some evidence of the activity there that we are very unlikely to see otherwise.  Here is hoping that this image Joshua has unearthed in his investigations takes it's place among the various classical ghost photos held in high esteem.

that is a weird photo for sure, if you look at the areas I highlighted, you can see other see blurry people and in the case of the man walking down the pile, his hand has a double exposure look. Does anyone else see these images?

Tonight on Coast to Coast AM, I'll be discussing the relationship between ghosts and UFOs. L.E.M.U.R. Investigator Micah Hanks wrote a great article about this for FATE Magazine. It includes input from Mobius and is now online at:

BTW, for daily updates on paranormal events (lately on the Bigfoot Hoax!), check out Micah's: http://gralienreport.com/

Also, for recent UFO pics accidentally captured by a newspaper photographer in Western North Carolina, see: http://users.boardnation.com/~shadowboxent/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=1706

In addition to the blurry people that Zero1509 posted, I also noticed what looks to be a person sitting on the beam near the center of the picture... if you look at a bigger copy of the image, just above the vertical beam that is labeled "E-7 1/2 CEN." you can see what appears to be a foot hanging over the side.  but it also appears that you can see part of the structure THROUGH the person.

One ghost frequently reported to inhabit (or visit) the White House is that of Abraham Lincoln.  Though not apparent in the second enlargement, the figure appears in the first enlargement to have a full black beard, with his head turned to observe the wall to his left.  Also, in both enlargements, the figure appears to be wearing a long coat that ends just above the knees.  If I'm not mistaken, I've seen pictures of Lincoln wearing such a coat.

yes the other people are quite clear.  That is definately a man sitting on the beam.  Not an apparition. As well as the guy at the bottom of the same upright beam.  What makes this photo questionable to me are the numerous blurry areas and double exposures.  That throws the whole photograph into question.  Why are some areas crystal clear and some areas blurry? In photos like this we need to keep in mind that there is the way the camera sees the world and the way it's developed in the dark room.  (red room for the print exposing).  The "full bodied apparition" could easily be done during the exposure process.  What we call darkroom magic.  "I want to believe."

LOL, at first look i thought the guy on the second beam in the middle of the photo was the ghost. But in looking at the photo, even if it was just a photo development error, its pretty uncanny. Its seems to me to be either the real thing, or a good hoax.

Hi I'm new to the site and really know very little about the paranormal, but like most people I do wonder about the many strange things that get reported and have no obvious answers to them.
The above said I find this photo very interesting and have some questions about the apparition.
First, he seems to have his hands folded and hanging down in front as if he is watching the work being done. Could a ghost have cognitive knowledge of our time frame?
Second, Is the surface the apparition is standing on from the time of the picture being taken or is it standing on a surface that dates to a previous era? If so when?

As stated by a caller on "Coast to Coast" tonight, "could this be a double exposure of some sort"? I would be interesting to hear from an expert on these question?

Thanks Guys,
and keep asking the tough questions!

Hi all, This is my first post here. I too just came in after hearing the show on Coast to Coast.

I believe that this photo could be the result of the negative lifting up in the enlarger or maybe the paper lifting up on the enlarging board during the exposure process in the darkroom.

I used to study B/W darkroom techniques many years ago and accidentally did something quite similar to this when the paper bubbled up slightly in one area.

Then again, It might be the biggest photographic evidence that we can hang around after we vacate our physical form!

With that said, I also believe that there are indeed entities, call them ghosts, apparitions, dimensional beings, whatever... And, these entities can and probably have been caught on film or digitally.

I have have personally experienced "unusual" occurrences that to this day, I have no explanation for.

I do want to believe but only after I have exhausted the pursuit of logical "corporeal" causes!

NO ghost in the White House in this case. This "ghost" is the result of a long exposure during which someone walked into the frame during the exposure and stopped there (or stood there briefly and walked out of the frame). This was a VERY common occurrence in this time period. Nothing else in the photo is blurred because the camera was on a tripod.

This is an amazing picture of a full entity. I also seen one on an episode of ghost hunters.  Grant and Jason showed that he was wearing a hat from world war 1. It was looking right at them and even moved its head. an intelligent haunt for sure.    R. Swisher

Very good technical explanation "Wingspann". But why would that person be wearing what seems to be 19th century grab.

This would of had to be a perpitrated hoax by the photographer.

Sorry, I need more then that  before make a call on someones character.

What do you make of the area where the subject is standing. It looks as if it is a base to a toy figure. Almost as if it was from a diffrent time and level.

Thanks,

The "ghost" image is too indistinct for me to tell what kind of garb he's wearing. No hoax by the photographer, as this kind of thing happened all the time back in those days. The photographer set up to take a LONG (not double) exposure due to the slow film of the day and the low light levels, and a worker simply wandered into the shot and stopped briefly during the exposure. I'd bet the photographer yelled at him to get out of the picture. The other people in the shot were told to be very still so they would not be blurred. Note that the dirt in the dozer bucket is not being dumped, just in position to be dumped. If it were being dumped, the bucket's movement would cause the bucket to be blurred, and there'd be a "waterfall" effect of the dirt falling from the bucket.

I have made this kind of shot hundreds of times while photographing equipment racks indoors using an 8"X10" view camera. I always told people walking by NOT to stop, and they were never recorded on the film. If they stopped, there would be a faint, blurred image of them where they stopped.

Yep. His foot didn't move during the exposure, but he appears to have leaned his body forward or back slightly. Just enough for some of the structure beyond him to show through the blurred image.

Here is a collection of Abbie Rowe photos of the pre-rehab WH and a chronical of the reconstruction.  Unfortuanately, the site housing these photos - The Truman Library - doesn't allow one to enlarge them.  it would be interesting to see the Abbie Rowe book, even if it's out of print.

http://www.trumanlibrary.org/abierowe/whitehse.htm

The photo in question is in this online collection, with the description noting its location:

East view along the south wall from the west window in the Housekeeper's Office. The Allis-Chalmers Diesel-powered Cletrac shovel is loading the truck, which goes out through the opening in the south wall near the east end, May 25, 1950

It's interesting to me that we are going back 58 years to find 'ghost photos'.  Today, every 8 year old is walking around with a cell phone web-cam.  Where are the 21st century photos of ghosts and UFOs and aliens?

Next to the guy at the base of the post is something blurry too. However it is behind the post  and stand above and below it.  Following the post all the way to the right there's also another completely transparent figure.
