I grew up in western NC and my friends and I spent more nights hiking and camping the Linville Gorge than you can imagine from the mid-80's to late 90's. We never took photos or video of the Brown Mountain Lights but have seen them in all conditions imaginable. There was one particular event that I thought I might share with this board.

Not sure which year it was, but it was late fall and three of us had decided to head to the gorge for the weekend. It was pretty damp so we all pulled out our hammocks and hung them from trees about 3 ft off the ground. As the fire died down we were lying in our hammocks and couldn't believe the number of lights we were seeing. They looked like giant fireflies just above the trees about a hundred yards from our campsite! They were of course way too big to be fireflies and some of them even seemed to change colors. We saw so many of them we eventually hiked over towards the area to see if there were any other campers in the area and found no one. After a few hours of the light show they seemed to be fewer and farther between but it was about then that I felt felt the hair on my arms stand up and by the looks on my friends faces I could tell they felt the same thing (confirmed this later as well), suddenly there was a tremendous flash and the next thing we knew, we were all getting up off the ground from being thrown from our hammocks (still not completely sure if we were actually thrown or just scared us out of them it happened so fast, lol). A few seconds later we heard the all too familiar rumble of thunder but nothing was scorched in our campsite to indicate a lightning strike and the rumble came to us seconds after the flash, not with the flash.

To this day we agree that we must have witnessed some sort of ball lightning traveling along the river but it just all seemed really odd that we were seeing so many lights before this incident.

Your 'sighting' may verify the theory that the lights are geologically produced.  Quartz in the ground vibrating could produce an electric field, (possibly the lights) culminating in a 'quake' that was strong enough to shake you from your hammocks!  Very interesting!
Thanks for posting this!

That is cool - what area were you camping in?

Thanks bulltaco for bringing Kane70's experience up front or on top for everyone here. That's a great story for Coast to Coast AM's Open Lines, thanks Kane70!

I need to spend more time reading the topic of Brown Mountain Lights!

As eerie prophetic lyrics it's chillingly an "Ode to Monsanto's CEO!"
