I am a new member of LEMUR and am researching the background of two places in the upstate of SC. One is the Poisett Bridge and the other is the old Greenville TB Hospital. The hospital has since burned down. It used to be an asylum as well. If anyone has links with pictures of the hospital, please let me know. I'd like to put together a segment for Speaking of Strange so we could discuss it.

I live in Greenville.  I sent you a email via private post sometime ago.  I never heard back.

babyt16 -- the Greenville TB Asylum is no longer there.  It's now a park, located across the street from the Shriners Club.  Contact me if you need further info.

Went looking for the bridge a few weeks ago. Anyone know how far down I should go? I was driving on highway 25 from Greenville to Asheville. I drove into a area that looks like a wooded reserve area. Any suggestions?

If  you're going towards Asheville from Greenville and you're on Hwy 25, you will take a right on to a road that's called Callahan Mountain Road --- I'm not sure if the road is marked as such but I do know that there is a marker there for Camp Old Indian and Saluda.  Somewhere after turning right, you should see La Bastide which is one of those really nice hotels.  La Bastide should be on your right.  If you keep going on the road you're on, you will eventually come to the proverbial fork in the road --- the sign used to read Camp Old Indian and Poinsett Bridge and it used to point to the right.  I say "used to say" because it's been a year since I've been up to the bridge so I'm not completely 110 % sure what it may say now.  The bridge should be located on your left --- unfortunately, it's not very well marked other than a granite sign.  The parking lot for the bridge is on the right side --- and it's not the best one in the world either.  If you get up to Camp Old Indian, you've gone tooooooo far.  The bridge is about a mile before you get to the bridge.

You can' t really see too much of the bridge from the road.  I do know that the South Carolina DNR has plans for refurbishing the area but they've been saying that for years.  Your best bet would be to park your car on the right and walk across the street.

If you need help, holler at me and I'll be than happy to meet you to go up there.  This is not the safest area to go into after dark.  I would love to hear what you find out there.

Cool! I guess I was closer than I thought. It may be a week or so before I get back that way. The movie theaters will be busy for a while so I'll be responding to service calls I am sure. I want to check it out very soon however.
