Here is the location of Lincoln academy according to google earth. I have been there several times. I grew up about 5 miles from this area. Not much left there, but you can tell where the building used to be, and the  famous tree is still there.

I have been there about three or four times also, but i will never go back again.....not after what happened the last time i went!

It was about 7:00 in the summer of 2006 myself and three of my firends all piled up in the truck and decided to go check it out. we were bored and there is not much to do in gastonia, well we got to the road and pulled down into a dirt area right in front of were that old wood house use to stand were the cops couldn't see us. we had to walk over a bunch of fallen trees and we started to walk through the cemetery that was on the right of where we were...right when we got there i knew something wasn't right so i just held on to my friends arm very tight....it was four of us two girls two guys the sun was starting to go down so it was getting dark but not dark enough were we couldn't see...i looked up to the top of the hill were the tree that the girl was tied to, because i felt something was watching us....as i look up i seen a very large black figure standing there, but you could see right through it and a blue light was flashing around it. well i didn't say anything because i thought i was imagining it, well we finished walking through the cemetery which freaked me out more becasue we found a huge bone lying on the ground and kept hearing things in the woods walking..we started to walk up the hill and all of my firends stopped walking as did i...they saw the same thing i was seeing....my friend brittany asked us "if we seen what she was looking at" we all said "yes". we stood there just looking at this black figure with the blue light flashing around its head, it looked as if it were looking at us to.....well the longer we stood there the closer it got but not walking becasue it hovered off the ground. (we stood ther for about ten min.) well i was terrified at this point so i take off running as does everyone else we jump in the truck and as we all look back as we speed off it is turned looking at us with the blue light still flashing around it, but now instead of standing at the top of the hill it is standing right were we had just been standing in the field.......that is the most frighting exsperience of my life but i vowed never to go back there.....the other three times i have been we have been in big groups and sitting on the back of our truck were we were parked that fourth time i went. you could watch that field in pitch dark just the moon shinning and you could see figures walking right across the field.......i think that it is one of the most haunted places in gaston county and now they are building houses out there they tore everything down except that one tree and relaocated the cemetery.

What an experience to share! Thanks and the chills you gave me are sure to keep me awake trying to sleep for second shift. The T.A.P.S. Ghost Hunters and the L.E.M.U.R Team members need to do an invo there.

I say all those moving into those new homes will regret it. Some states supposedly require a home's haunted history to be included in the tall stack of papers to sign. Maybe someone here knows more about that. Those new homes will come well equipped with old spirits.

I'm surprised you went back more than one time!

The history of the old Lincoln Academy is a very proud, honorable one. There is nothing dark about it. The ONLY thing, to my knowledge, that happened out there that was the least bit disturbing was the death of that young girl in the 70's. The area itself is beautiful, right at the foot of Crowders Mountain, near the Crowders Mountain State park. I don't remember there ever being a cemetery near there. It's just above the Crowders Mountain Golf Club. And, Josh, no, they are not building houses directly on the property now. The development is going in near there but not on it.

Me and my friends went there many times as teenagers. We would usually get stoned and go walking around where the building once stood. But now, all of that is grown over. If it wasn't for the lady getting killed there, I bet we never would have known it existed.

I haven't read the story (that someone posted a link to) about her yet, but if I remember correctly, they tied the girl up to the tree with barbed wire, sowed her mouth up, and raped her. Now i'll go back and read the story to see if I remembered correctly.

Also, nearby, there was a woman that lived up on a hill that was known as the snake lady. She used to drive up and down Franklin at night in her pickup truck and always had a snake with her. She used to have a lot of satanic stuff going on at her house too. I don't know if she is still around or not since this all took place 30+ years ago.

Last weekend my son and I went to do some research in one of our ancestor's cemetery and old homestead. We passed by the entrance to Lincoln Academy as we started out on our trek. I told him about the fellow on this board who said there was a cemetery there so we set out to try and find it. As many times as I have been up there, I had never seen a cemetery on that property ---- until last Sunday. It appears that some of the land is being cleared at the Southern end, near the Crowders Mountain Golf Club. We turned in to the property and pulled around towards the back of the old school campus and found the cemetery. It is still being used, there are some fairly recent graves there. Ladies and Gents, this is a private cemetery with someone's loved ones buried there. It appeared to be an old family cemetery. If you follow the road around the old ruins (or what's left of them) the drive way will take you right to it. We took some pics but I don't know how to post them here. What disturbed me is several gravestones have been damaged and one crypt was damaged. This is not a place for fun and games - it makes me truely sad to see where someone split a tombstone or tried to vandalize a grave. If you decide to head out there, do so with reverence and in the day time. Dottie
