I heard Joshua this morning on Coast to Coast AM and he mentioned about going to Key West to investigate Robert the Doll.  I cannot wait to hear the results of his "visit" with Robert.  I, myself, along with some family members had an encounter with Robert in August of 2007.  I was left with the impression that Robert is an entity not to be messed with.  I am scheduled to be in Key West in a couple of weeks and I will not be visiting his current residence in the East Martello fort/museum.  One encounter is enough!  Anybody else got any thoughts or stories about Robert the Doll.

My encounter with Robert the Doll took place in late August of 2007.  I had read the story about Robert and was eager to see him in person.  We were in Key West for a week and traveling with my wife's aunt and her boyfriend/ fiance (he proposed and they were married in KW this same week with us as the witnesses). We had rented some scooters and rode out to the East Martello Fort which is the museum that is the current resident for Robert.  He is housed in a glass case across from an alcove that presents letters and pictures of Robert taken and reurned from tourists who make the mistake of taking Robert's picture without his permission.  Every letter was an apology to Robert and a description of assorted mishaps that occurred to the writers.  My wife's uncle Ron was making fun of Robert and daring me to get my picture taken with him.  I told  Ron that this doll was haunted and that he should not be disrespected.  I must say that I could feel evil coming from the doll and my wife commented on the same thing.  We finished up our tour of the museum and checked out the gift shop where I donated some money for the resident cat that lived at the museum.  The lady who ran the gift shop mentioned a restaurant on the way back that had very good cuban sandwhiches.  We mounted our scooters but before we took off I said "no spirit hitch-hikers".  We were about two minutes down the road at the intersection near where the sandwich shop was and my wife's aunt blew her horn at Ron.  She turned in front of me and my wife and I locked up the brakes and barely avoided colliding with her.  When she hit her horn Ron's throttle hung and he shot into the right-hand curb and went down over the scooter.  We got him up and he rode the scooter to the Key West ER where he was treated for a broken ankle.  They were married two days later.  I told Ron that he made a mistake disrespecting Robert the Doll and he totally agreed.  Ron has seen ghosts and had his share of paranormal encounters.
So, I wonder why the rest of us were able to get out of this unscathed?  Was it the fact that I made the disclaimer before we departed or that Ron was the only one who showed disrespect or that I was nice to the museum cat or just maybe the fact that I have been riding motorcycles for over 35 years?!

Here is what I know about Robert the Doll.  Robert the Doll was given to Robert Eugene Otto as a child. Young Gene (as Otto was known), loved the doll and played with it constantly. But Robert seem to take on a life of
his own. Objects were found broken in Robert's presence, the family heard the pitter patter of tiny feet around the house, and Gene seemed to grow afraid of
Robert.

After Gene grew to adulthood and married, Robert was banished to the attic. To her horror, Mrs. Otto heard the pitter patter of little feet in the attic and even heard singing coming from the attic. After Gene passed away in 1972, the house stood empty for a long time. The house gained a reputation for being haunted and people claimed to see Robert looking out the attic window. After the home was finally purchased, Robert was donated to the East Martello Museum. Of course, the museum workers claim that Robert wanders the museum at night. Some security guards claimed to have seen him. He was finally placed in a glass case to make him stay put. Peppermint candy is placed in the case to bribe Robert not to roam. The peppermint candies disappear during the night. After a major hurricane flooded the East Martello Museum, Robert the Doll was found in the rafters. The musuem only flooded a couple of feet, nowhere near the rafters.

I was wondering if Joshua Warren has been to Key West yet to visit with Robert the Doll?  I would love to hear his impressions after seeing Robert.  I hope JW reports on the meeting when he gets down to Key West.

How did I miss your post on Robert the doll?   Coast to Coast AM with George Noory and Joshua's Robert the doll investigation was rated a 10. I hope you two heard it and being a night owl has it's benefits.

bulltaco thanks for the first hand experience down there in Key West. That is creepy! I would like to go back some day.

I liked owlwoman's history on Robert too! Thanks you two and there is bound to be more posting here soon.

This post should have been entered on Speaking of Strange, but when I posted Joshua was just talking about going to KW.  I did go down there at the end of February but like I said I have finished my experiences with Robert the Doll!  If you take a trip to KW (and you owe it to yourself to go) by all means visit the East Martello and check out Robert for yourself.  There is alot more to this island than meets the eye and it seems that everybody may have a ghost story to share.  I am researching a story about a lady claiming to be an oracle that my aunt and uncle encountered there that predicted their future marriage.  They met her once and never saw her again and no one they have asked about her has ever seen her!  That's KW for ya!

Will do after retirement as a best guess for Key West. I was not aware the southern most point in the USA was full of strange happenings. But winning a lottery will help get me there much sooner.

That was very interesting noting the lady oracle!

You should subscribe to Coast's newer version of Streamlink to catch Joshua's report of Robert the Doll. And his other times on with George Noory in three years of shows standing by to members. I have been a member several times to catch and record certain shows in 2001, 2006, and 2008.

Lloyd Pye and Linda Mouton Howe were great guests last night!  The Star Child skull's DNA was Lloyds contribution. Linda covered the earth mysteries noted on her website. Have a look...

So my wife and I are headed back to Key West on August 20 and coming back the following Saturday!  This time besides the regular visitors, my daughter and her husband are coming for the first time.  Since they are visiting initially I really feel like they should check out Robert the Doll.  I don't care to revisit him myself, but I do feel like they should at least go see him.  Actually my curiosity has gotten the best of me and against my better judgement we may go see him!  Should we?

Yes, you should, but don't take his picture.  Or, at least don't disrespect him and do ask his permission.  You don't want anymore scooter mishaps.

The link reminded me of another incident involving Robert!  We were on the Ghost Tour and standing outside the Artist House where Gene Otto lived with Robert.  One of our fellow tourist took a picture of the house with his digital camera and when he checked his shot there was a picture of Robert superimposed on the picture!  He claimed he had not been to the museum and taken Robert's picture.  It was pretty freaking considering my previous experience with the doll but, "hey" it is Key West!  I got the story this weekend from my Aunt and Uncle about their encounter with the Oracle and I found it to be typically interesting considering the locale!

We got back from KW last Sunday after a delay to a little storm named Irene!  I drove by the East Martello Fort museum but could not bring myself to go in and renew aquaintances!  I did visit some haunted sites briefly after dark but had nothing paranormal happen!  I did enjoy some spirits in some of the drinking establishments and did some snorkeling and kayaking!  Awesome destination and I encourage everyone to go there if you get the chance!

It is a great destination bulltaco. I was down there in the Winter of 78. As my family walked the streets during the day we found ourselves across from a closed movie theater.

A red letter "T" fell from the huge marque on the front. I picked it up and still have it to this day. I wish I could remember the movies that were spelled out in plastic letters.

When we toured the concrete Spanish galleon ship built for Mel Fisher. At the end of the short tour our guide offered us 100 shares in Mel's Treasure Salvors Inc. for $1,000. I nearly said yes and wished I had not said, "Thanks anyways but no thanks."    Oops! The wreck of the Atocha was found by Mel and his family. Then the battle began to claim it with the state of Florida edging in without any efforts, dangers or expenses!

I would like to go back to Key West. But if I do go back I will walk on past the home of Robert the Doll.

It is good to keep this Web site going strong to deter spammers who might decoy right on in with a splash!

They are all foreign quacks anyways!
