Just found a great link to Alaskan ghost towns:

From personal experience, I spent the night a Dyea near Skagway circa 1992.

A friend had bought a brand new Suzuki Sidekick just before the trip. We left Florida to return a month later with an initiatory 15,000 miles on it!

We were at Dyea in the middle of summer and the plan was to find a remote spot and pitch camp. The mosquitos were so voracious that we decided to just sleep in the car.

When the air inside got muggy, I cracked a window about a quarter inch. The mosquitos swarming outside smelled blood and swarmed the crack in the window. I would let them start to squeeze through and quickly roll the window up squishing them. This little game went on for a time and my record was 4 kills in one roll-up, if that helps illustrate how thick the little blood-thirsty bugger were.

On our Alaskan tour we stopped and snooped around several abandoned mines and buildings. The atmosphere in these places was always eerie... desolate, quiet, with just the sound of loose tin rattling in the wind. Never saw any ghosts per se, but spent a great deal of time with the obligatory and satisfying goose-bumps such a place should offer anyone who goes looking.
