Hi, my name is Kayleigh and I am a year 12 student at a 6th form in Surrey. I have put together a questionnaire to collect information for my Communication Studies coursework, and would really appreciate your answers. The questions are open so you can type as much as you like; the more the better! Please copy and paste this questionnaire into a new email, answer it as fully as you like, and send it back to me .
The aim of my coursework is to see whether people find it easier to disclose information about themselves to people they meet on the internet, that they would not normally talk about in face-to-face conversation.
Some of the questions *might* be a little intrusive, and please don’t feel you have to answer them if you don’t want to. You don’t have to include your name, age or gender and your email addresses will be kept strictly confidential. Thanks.
1. How often would you say you use the internet?
2. What would you say you use more:
Instant messenger services (e.g. msn),
Chat rooms (e.g. lycos.co.uk)
OR
Forums (geared at your personal interests etc)?
3. Do you know why this is?
4. Do you find it easy to tell people you are Close to information about yourself?
5. Do you Generally find it easy to tell people you have just met face-to-face personal information about yourself? (These do not include counsellors or doctors etc)
6. When using the internet do you use emoticons or actions to show a sort of ‘body language’ e.g. lol, *blush*, ?
7. Have you found you share more information about yourself (that you might not have told friends or family) with people you get into conversations with over the internet?
8. If so, why? (Reasons can include you never having to meet them, not minding what they think of you, ‘real-life’ people not understanding what you’re talking about etc) Also, how personal does some of the information get? For example your deepest darkest secrets, or problems you have that you don’t feel you can talk about with people who know you personally.
9. Have you built and maintained any online relationships? If so, to what extent?
10. Do you think that online relationships are any less valid than face-to-face relationships? Why?
Thank you for your time! |

Hi, Christy Foree class of 1998 and an ICP- Business Communications Major. Since graduating, I have been working, first as a marketing manager for Feld Entertainment and now as the Marketing Director of the American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX. My Business and communications background helped me to develop my Public Relations and Marketing Skills and I constantly use my Public Speaking Skills to represent the American Airlines Center at local speaking engagements and on television. I am so excited to hear that Furman is further developing this department and if there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. I hope to see everyone at our 5 year Reunion this Fall.
Thanks!

My name is Mark Childress and I was one of the first Communication Majors at Furman University - graduating in 1995. At that time, I had to "create my own major" since there was no communications department. I think I took four classes taught by Delancey and three by Letteri.
My Communication major at Furman paved the way for an interesting career path. I started out doing morning sports at a local radio station before I even graduated(WORD 1330 AM). I then moved to Toccoa, Georgia and became the first weekday sports anchor at a new CBS television affiliate started there. After a year on TV, I left the media industry and went into telecom sales. Six years later, I am still in sales at a company called Level 3 Communications.
I am unbelievably thrilled that Communications is an official major at Furman. The addition of TV and film opportunities on campus sounds great as well.
Dr Letteri - I would love to hear from you and find out if I can help out in any way. I currently live in Atlanta but travel to Greenville at least once a month.
All other alumni and current students, feel free to contact me if you have any questions about career opportunities. I still have a ton of contacts in the business. Mark.Childress@Level3.com.

Hello and welcome to the Communication Studies Website and the Alumni Forum,
As you can see from our new website, faculty, staff, and student organizations, there have been a great many changes in the department since many of you have graduated. We are particularly excited about the new media center (television production studio and computer lab for courses in journalism, film, etc.) that will be built as part of the Furman Hall renovations that will be completed in the Fall of 2004. We are also very encouraged by how many of our majors are now submitting academic papers to conventions and undergraduate journals.
We would be interested in hearing from you so drop us a line. We would particularly like to have your change of address and learn about what you are doing now. We have a great many potential students who ask us about what our alums have done with their degrees so tell us what you have been doing since you graduated.
All the best,
Rich Letteri |
