For the rumoured cost of scrapping her, it would have been more cost effective to relocate it and preserve it as a training vessel as there was certainly no rot below the water line and if the stupid council upped the security when it was worth saving instead of after it would of not been vandalised, and could have been restored.

Hi Dinger, do you think it would have been cheaper to keep Kellington afloat than it cost to rip her up? I have always been suspicious of incompetence because some things that happen must be deliberate because no-one would be so stupid to do such things.

Hi Georgo
There is a difference between tearing apart for a reason and murder, the Kellington was murdered however no one will be brought to justice for this murder of a fine vessel, as they call it progress and as we the UK have only two left, after they are both gone, who will care ? In ten years time when some one mentions a ton it will be referred to an old measure of weight.
Would still like to see publicly how much it cost the tax payers to dispose of the K, I have a good guess  !!!!!!

As a young man I joined H.M.S. Crofton at H.M.S. Diligence when Crofton was brand new. We joined the 108th Minesweeping Squadron in Malta. Crofton completed some Cyprus patrols and visited interesting places in the Med. I said goodbye to Crofton in 1960. Since then I had no idea what Crofton was doing or where she was. Thanks to Ton Talk I have discovered that Crofton helped to rescue the men of H.M.S. Fiddleton and in the latest issue of Ton Talk I learned that Crofton rescued the survey ship Nadia from some marauding soviet 'trawlers.' Well done Crofton and well done Ton Talk. Ton Talk and Ton Class Website are really well done.                                Georgo.

Hi Ton members. Since we have seen Kellington torn apart piece by piece, I hope that any other Tons that have to go are taken out to sea where they belong and given a sailors goodbye in Davey Jones' locker. Sailors can understand that. Tearing ships apart is un-natural and nasty. The Tons served a long and usefull life, they were real ships and they deserve some respect.
Whaddya think!  Georgo.

8   GENERAL CATEGORY / Messages etc / HMS Caroline to be decommissioned  on: October 17, 2009, 11:52:35 AM

Ex-WO(MW) John Docherty has posted this message on the Mine Warfare Association website:

"I've just received news that HMS Caroline the 1st world war cruiser now moored in Belfast is to be decommissioned on 1 December this year. Those of you who had interactions with the Royal Naval Reserve will know that she was (and still is at present) the headquarters for Ulster Division RNR.

The present senior rates in Ulster RNR want to hold a last dinner on board on Saturday 14 November and want as many former serving senior rates (RN & RNR) to attend.

I do not as yet have contact details for those who wish to book a place but I'll post them as soon as I get them. As this will apply to MW Senior Rates as well as those from other branches, it would be helpful if colleagues could pass this information on to any other serving and former senior rates from non-MW branches.

As a bit of background information, Caroline hosted a number of Ton class ships as its tender as well as the last serving inshore minesweeper, HMS Thatcham. Her last operational tender was the River Class minesweeper, HMS Helford."

I'd just like to put a mention on here, having not long got home from another very good reunion up in Southport. Bravo Zulu to all those involved in another smooth running operation.
The guest of honour, Harry Cartlidge gave one of the best speeches heard in years, cant wait for it to come out in Ton Talk.
A brilliant weekend

I, agree.

I know nothing about Charity Law but presumably they do not go bankrupt/insolvent in the same way that individuals or companies do. The Charity must have some assets left. Can the Trustees not be forced to do something?

Who were these useless Trustees?

In the meantime cannot someone remove the fittings from the ship and store them somewhere?

It seems like only yesterday I left her in Port Edgar!

Since writing this earlier today and starting to think I have emailed the Insolvency Practitioners that handled the liquidation of the Trust and its associated trading company to get some details regarding any asetts that there might be and to start having a look at what happened; we need to do this before we can see what we can do, if anything to try to save the Bron.

I have also emailed the Mayor of Birkinhead, Councillor Hodson, to ask what he thinks should happen.

I don't have a lot of time to spend on this matter but lets just see what has been going on and then see if there is a possible solution.
