1   General Category / Philosophy / Hunt for the worst ever argument  on: December 4, 2008, 06:45:22 AM

Hi - I thought you philosophers might be interested in contributing to our discussion, and hunt for, the worst ever argument.

It began as a hunt within Britain - but lots of others have joined in.

The piece is at http://r-p-e.blogspot.com/2008/12/britains-worst-argument.html

Hope it is of interest -

Cheers,
Dave

2   General Category / Philosophy / What is "good" and "evil"?  on: November 17, 2008, 12:24:44 AM

What exactly is "good" and "evil"? In my own personal opinion, there are no such things as "good" or "evil". Everyone has their own different definitions and opinions of what exactly are these things, so we cannot be absolutely certain of who is correct. In our community, the closest thing humanity has come close to defining these terms are the conflicts with one's own community morals. However, we cannot be certain if our morals are correct. Hell, for all I know what we call "immoral" may actually be deemed as "moral". E.g. whatever seems immoral is evil. Whatever seems moral is good. ex. is cloning humans. Perhaps we were suppose to clone humans instead of doing it the "old-fashioned way". Of course, it is now illegal and viewed as "immoral" and evil. Who are we to say what is correct or not, however, if we are constantly being hypocritical against these morals? (Little bit hard to read, I'm feeling a little bit light-headed and my grammar sucks at the moment.)

If you do not believe in God, but in free will, you will not be saved because of your choice.

So in this instance, a choice has been made.  Whether or not one will be "saved" is irrelevent, for he has still made his choice -- and thus exercised free-will.

Through my own experience, I've currently come to conclusion that their are two categories of choice: consequential, and inconsequential.  The decisions which environs and society impose are moreoften superficial, and therefore inconsequential, in that the rest of the universe could care less wether a man goes to work, consumes this and that, etc.  Perhaps this form cannot be free of influence and internatization.  But consequential choice (which is relative) consists of metaphysics, transcending yourself and ritual unto a dimension of time and space which cannot be regulated and controlled be others -- because you are perhaps the only resident!  Here, although abstract, the conclusions you come to are your own.

For instance, my decision to participate in this forum is a reflection of my own will.  Although I've been conditioned both consciously and subconsciously throughout my lifetime, this sort of action is free of any institution.

Capital punishment is a euphimism, what we are debating is -- in all instances -- murder, and worse yet, a form of oftentimes legalized murder, which is empircal immoral.

The value of a conversation is contained within its content, regardless of the medium.

Haha, this forum seems abandoned, ah well...

I can't believe this forum is still here and we just now discovered it.

I wonder if anyone will venture fourth and try to operate this old thing?

does a  man really has the right to choose if he, himself, are surrounded and controlled by so many forces around him and his free will is nothing but only  a reaction as an answer to call of the strongest force that controls him?
