I'll probably follow this up on the main page but will refer you to http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050325-4737.html for a well-written story that brings up a few things.

The protestors who want to "save" Terri Shiavo are the same miscreants who are ardently against a euthanasia policy in this country.  Therefore, if she is capable of acknowledging suffering, Mrs. Shiavo does so at the explicit wishes of those who protest around her hospital.

These are also the same idiots who say we should wait for a scientific cure or procedure.  Yet, they and their conservative Luddite politicians do everything within their power to discredit science and actively stop research with stem cells which may have found said cure; though likely not given the severity of damage.

So, these "compassionate conservatives" do nothing more than cackle like hens while removing the means for the advance of science and the possiblity of death with dignity.

Hypocrites and liars, the whole lot of them.

So, on today's post I alluded to a story about tribal leaders in Minnesota and elsewhere complaining about Bush's non-existant response to the school shootings there.  Turns out he did address the issue in his weekly radio address, to praise the school guard that had been shot and killed for confronting the shooter.

That's all well and good as we should honor someone who puts his life on the line for the protection of others.  But that is not the point being made by the tribe or anyone else involved.  In fact, it may be the least of them.

Having worked in various casinos installing my company's systems, I've got to see a few tribes doing very well and many, many more struggling to give their people a better life.  And those are just the few who are able to build a casino to generate more money for the tribe.  I'm definitely not an expect on the situation or conditions they face.

That said, I do give a damn about the welfare of all Americans and pretty much any human being trying to live a good life, something which Bush does not.  In fact, he only seems to give a rat's ass about his voting supporters.  End of story.

Case in point, the tsunami disaster in Asia over the holiday season.  It took Bush four days to get off his kiester and pretend to feign concern over the lives of over a 100,000 dead.  This is, and let's be honest here, in direct opposition to an immediate world outcry over the loss of less than 3,000 people on 9/11, with a great many of them not even being Americans.  So much support amongst even our adversaries and when a chance to reciprocate such feelings is presented, the idiot in charge of our country shrugs and "clears brush" until he can be convinced he should actually give a moment to comment on it.

The same happens here amongst our own people.  Ten people shot dead and you'd think the guy spends the time to go there or make mention of the situation in a meaningful way.

No.  Instead, he's playing politics over the life of Terri Shiavo, trampling on the rights of her husband (puts the lie to all his talk of defending the sanctity of marriage, right?), dismissing scientific medical assessments (because science is all a sham to him), and generally injecting government into a place where it trampels privacy (once again, putting a lie to the entire supposed platform of the GOP).  Feel free to tell me I'm wrong on any of this; but I don't really think I am in this instance.

No, instead of showing concern over dead citizens who probably didn't vote for him, or children he can't now send off of some vendetta war, we've got to talk about a situation that is a private family affair.  We have to wait four days before showing concern and condolence for the lives lost.  We have to avoid the greater issues that affect the tribal areas of our nation and focus on the bravery of one man, as if Bush only acknowledges such behavior as an aberrant part of the community.  Its a damning, bigoted response and they have a right to be indignant.

Basically, the same guy who fights against waiting periods for a handgun purchase, who can't stop to wait for research and intelligence as to whether we should put our troops in harm's way before invading a nation, who refuses to listen to opposing views on basically anything and goes full speed ahead when he thinks he's right on something; this is the same ilk who takes four days to even remotedly acknowledge the deaths of those who are not his most ardent supporters.

Four days to show what should be an immediate human response. Four days to show care and concern and to reach out to a wounded community.  And in this case, not even the latter.  Its a sham and a lie.  And apparently, the core of what being a compassionate conservative is all about.

Thanks for posting.  And very cool that you got to run into Tom.  We're hoping he can head out here to Vegas for a few days soon.

As for him looking older, I saw that in him in September during his 15-day leave.  Its ironic that we moved back to Galva so he at least could grow up in a safer environment than what we had in Texas.  And he ended up in a warzone anyway.  That's life I guess.

I'm just glad he got home safe and that everyone else in the unit got to come home (though some have some serious wounds to deal with).

In any case, the more visitors the merrier I would say.

Hi John. Thanks for the welcome. With Tom getting home over the weekend, I had started wondering last week if I should pop in and say hi to you. I remembered I had come across your website before, so here I am saying hi.  Anyway, I saw Tom and your mom in Kewanee Saturday night. He looked good, but older than I remember (imagine that, right). So take care and don't be surprised if my brother drops in too.

Not sure what to do here.

I know I get traffic here on the forums.  I know every so often I get the random new member.  Case in point: everyone welcome Sunrise.

My problem is, what should I do with the darn thing if no one else is using it?

I suppose I could rant away and keep the main site as a link and random thoughts area.  Which would probably be for the best if I get long-winded about stuff.  Those who know me know how likely that actually can be.

I am also soliciting ideas from you, the few, the bored.  On an earlier version of the boards Liz and I discussed some books we really liked but that died out.

Tsume is eventually getting off his submarine and might add some more to his antics (and I swear he's not on crack!).

Basically, I just want some input if you have any to give.  I would also like an assist with fleshing out the chronology and history on the Galva Guard subsite if anyone wants to lend a hand on that.

Anything else?

8   Rants / Rants / Partisan politicking from the front  on: October 18, 2004, 10:11:40 PM

NOTE:  The following was meant to be part of my main page post but I chose to put it here in the interests of concentrating on the election and the decision facing all of us.

To be honest, I had hoped I wouldn't ever actually see this happen by someone who should be more worried about taking care of our troops than on spinning the Iraq War for his candidate of choice.  I'm a touch disappointed.  I don't expect much more from myself with this election than a focus on removing the man who endangered my brother and, by extension, every soldier, sailor, airman, and marine in Iraq with his lies.  I anticipate those who would argue the point that details don't matter, but results do.  Then again, I saw that argument coming from those esconced in a barcalounger at home. I expect better from those who lead those troops.

In any case, the rant.

And now, to an uncomfortable and possibly controversial commentary. After being chastised for bringing up some issues earlier in the year being faced by our troops in Iraq, I have not heard much from Major Kessel, who is commander for Battery F. Indeed, by all accounts he has put his nose to the grindstone and has diligently worked to relay home all the good things our troops are doing in Iraq despite their dangerous situation. This is, I think we can all agree, something our media should be doing a better job of and I commend him for the effort. I have, I think, an understanding with the Major that while I have serious issues with the rationale for going to Iraq, I am willing to do what I can to support their efforts from home.

At the time, the Major replied, "Concerning political commentary, as active duty soldiers we do not have the right to publicly express dissent with our political leaders." as he was relating a difference of policy opinion with former president Clinton. That said, I would believe the opposite to be true as well. Which concerns me as in recent days in both the Galva News and Kewanee Star Courier, he has tried to justify Bush's rationale for going to Iraq as part of the War on Terror.

Before you get to typing that nastygram, let me reiterate a couple points. One, I realize that al-Zarqawi and his cohorts have just joined up on the al-Qaeda hatewagon. Two, I realize that terrorists are actively fighting our soldiers in Iraq. Three, I support those troops in doing whatever they need to do to complete their mission in a way that gets them home safe and does not damage the world's view of America's motives of freedom and democracy any more than our political leaders have made it.

What I object to, and what I feel is a strongly politicized view from a supposedly non-political source, is the continued assertion that we who disagree with this war are wrong to suggest that Iraq was never a terrorist haven (which all reports indicate it was not) and that we are wrong to suggest that going to war there was a diversion from pursuing terrorists while they were scattered, loosely coordinated and elsewhere. Iraq, prior to our invasion, was not part of the War on Terror; continuing to suggest otherwise with the weight of evidence showing this either hints at a deep disrespect for the evidence or at least a disdain for those who object to keeping our political leaders in power after they openly lobbied to send our troops into harm's way without any real reason. Since there are terrorists currently in Iraq like moths to a flame, please feel free to shoot the bastards, but do not tell me I am wrong to believe our rationale for invading the country was flawed at best and disingenous at the worst.

Well, it looks like our pal Tracy has joined and someone with the name of Jane.

Welcome to the both of you.

Seriously don't have anything to add other than that I'm a tad busy right now and will likely try to add a rant or something in the near future.  Work is about to get interesting so that's going to be a time hog for the next week or so.

Everyone who still visits this neglected part of the Wallenfeldt.com media village should stop and take a moment to welcome Lucas Siemers to the board.

Currently he's watching my brother's back and making sure he's not getting in over his head in Baghdad, so he and the rest of the unit are VIPs in my book.  He's also a great all-around guy in his own right.

I was afraid I'd have to move my news board posts here should the Galva Armed Services page get too politicized, but that seems to have calmed down.

Tell ya what Lucas, ask around and see if you guys want to use this board for your own stuff.  More off-color than what Jim Doherty's Yahoo group provides or something.  Maybe just general requests and the like. I'll set up the topics and you guys can go to town on it.

Frankly, I'd like the see the darned thing used for once. Just let me know.
