| It does go out from time to time...and in the past several weeks it has been down more than usual. The company that streams for us has been performing some upgrades, which has caused much of the downtime, and Samford's internet capacity is not what it should be. But we're trying to get it more stable. |

I've tried pulling up the stream several times during the past six months and am unable to get it. I can barely hear the station where I live via the radio because I'm in the signal's fringe area.
Anyone have any info about when the stream is going to be back up? |

General Discussion / CD & Concert Review / Holiday Jazz |

How about a little Winter Wonderland on this 91 degree October day
We're starting to get in our new Christmas CD's...and Boney James & Dave Koz each have new holiday albums. From what I've sampled, these will be great additions to your collection to get you in the holiday spirit!
WVSU will be playing samples off each when our holiday programming begins in December. I may be a little biased, but I'm fairly certain we have the best Christmas music in town! |

General Discussion / CD & Concert Review / Briza & Ambient Cafe |

As long as I'm bringing up CD's on the fringe of "smooth jazz," here's another: Ambient Cafe by Briza, a group led by David Arkenstone.
Based on favorable feedback from the first cut we played off the record, "Splashdown", we've added a second, "Electric Rain."
Both tunes hark back to the days when so-called "New Age" music was more aligned with contemporary jazz. Although c-jazz has evolved toward more of an R&B sound, I think music like this remains a nice change of pace in our smooth jazz lineup.
Of course, I'd love to hear what you think!

"The Best of Diana Krall" is out (Sept. 18). Probably no need to elaborate. Here's her website for more info:

General Discussion / CD & Concert Review / Babyface does Dylan |

...and Clapton and Fogelberg, Jim Croce and James Taylor. Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, multi-Grammy-winning pop/R&B singer/songwriter releases his 11th album Playlist today (Sept. 18).
WVSU is currently playing the iconic, mournful Taylor ballad "Fire and Rain," though I'd like to share them all with you. Good stuff!
Other titles from yesteryear include "Shower the People," "Time in a Bottle," "Wonderful Tonight," and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." Edmonds channels Bob Dylan with one of two original songs on the record, "The Soldier Song." Also keep a hankie handy as he explains divorce to his youngest son in "Not Going Nowhere."
Though Playlist defies format radio, it's a great addition to our "smooth jazz" lineup...and if you like any of the names listed above, it's recommended for your music collection. |

Samford is hosting the Superjazz Big Band this year - an all-star band of Birmingham jazz musicians. Their first show is Sunday, Sept. 9 at 3 pm at Brock Recital Hall. (This is the new recital hall next to the concert hall - it's worth the price of admission just to see it!) The price of admission, by the way, is $5 for adults and $3 for students. |
